of the 24th. instant, I have the honour to forward the enclosed copies of joint letters, datdd the 26th. and 27th. instant, from Messrs. David, Sassoon and Company, Limited, and Messrs. B. D. Sassoon and Company and to request you to be good enough to demand from the Chinese Authorities the immediate release of the two chests of opium in question. It seems clear from the enclosed letters that a gross breach of treaty rights has been
committed.
